Composition Study - Franz Marc, Dog Lying in the Snow

I'm starting a series of 20 composition studies of some of my favorite paintings. It is a suggested assignment on conceptart.org. The assignment requires that you choose some of your favorite paintings and turn them into grey scale, and then use any media to re-create the art. My first study is pencil on paper of Franz Marc's Dog Lying in the Snow.

I've always loved this painting. There is a repetition of curved triangular shapes along the top. The shadows of the dog are broken down into varied geometric shapes of varied weight. There is a great range of dark to light. Overall, the painting is very harmonious, simple and balanced.

I realize that my composition is not as wide as the original. Will aim for a perfectly matched ratio next time!
